Dry Ice: is it LETHALLY DANGEROUS?
Dry Ice: is it LETHALLY DANGEROUS?

Between "Genuine danger" and "Raving Safety Paranoia" there must be some sensible middle ground. Dry ice is fun. Figure out a way to handle it safely. Buy dry ice from suppliers listed in your yellow pages phone book for about per pound. Or in Seattle, get it from certain Fred Meyer stores, or from QFC grocery, in their seafood section. Dry ice lasts a couple of days when stored in a thick-wall styrofoam box with a lid. It lasts longer if you place a couple of layers of paper bags in the box so the dry ice isn't pushing against the styrofoam. Even better is to wrap it in many layers of aluminized mylar "emergency blanket." If outdoors, keep the box out of the wind (the slightest bit of air motion will evaporate it all within hours.) Bed Bug Dry Ice Trap
Bed Bug Dry Ice Trap
9:14
tv.bedbugcentral.com In this episode Jeff will discuss the recent news on a simple and easy to make bed bug monitor created by Rutgers University to monitor for bed bugs. The Bed Bug Dry Ice Trap is an easy to create monitor for bed bugs that utilizes dry ice as the attractant that hungry bed bugs are attracted to. It is true that bed bugs are attracted to the monitor and this monitor can be the most effective that we currently have available to us, but there are some things you should be aware of if you do try to create this monitor on your own (do-it-yourself). Please also be aware that even though this monitor was shown to outcompete the commercially available monitors (CDC 3000 and Nightwatch), those devices were also very effective in detecting low level bed bug infestations. First, this monitor is not intended to be used by pest control companies as there are hazards associated with dry ice that may create liabilities for pest control companies setting this monitor in clients homes. Pest control companies should consider using the commercially manufactured devices (CDC 3000 and Nightwatch) that were found to also be effective for detecting bed bugs Also, please remember that a zero-trap-catch does not necessarily mean that you do not have bed bugs. These monitors are intended to attract hungry bed bugs to them and therefore not all bed bugs are attracted to these types of monitors. In order to create this monitor you will need a dog bowl (that can be used similarly ...
SaK Dry Ice Experiment
SaK Dry Ice Experiment

A little movie we made for our science project. For the first part, we have made a dry ice bubble in a bowl. The dry ice, or frozen carbon dioxide (C02), is denser than the air we breathe so the bubble eventually plops down. For the second part, we have a simple dry ice bomb. We just put dryice and water into the bottle and threw it into the yard, and a shard of the bottle actually hit the window on the second floor... For the third part, we constructed a cannon, firing a tennis ball over about 200 ft. With just the bomb from the second part and a tennis ball.

Buy dry ice in the Seattle area at QFC supermarkets. It's about .00 per pound, in the seafood section. Bring a styrofoam cooler. Otherwise check your yellow pages under Dry Ice, or phone various supermarkets. Dry ice creates water-fog droplets which become trapped in the viscous thin "boundary layer" of air above a dark water surface. LOOKS COOL! Long ago at the U. of Rochester we had nerd parties with the SF society, gamers, etc. I'd supply a block of dry ice as one major piece of entertainment. (Makes big booms when, ahem, misused.) Finally I built some official equipment: painting a cookie sheet black. Years later I used this phenomenon to demonstrate the gas clouds around rotating comet nuclei.
